Trent Lott to Resign From The Senate

Senator Trent Lott (Miss.) is resigning from the Senate. He has not yet given a reason for this sudden resignation. It is expected that the Governor of Mississippi will appoint a Republican to fill his seat until 2008 when a statewide election will be held.

This is one Republican Senator that cannot leave fast enough. He was a big spender with a penchant for earmarks and, as Senate Majority leader through 2002, his performance was, to put it charitably, less than stellar. He encapsulated all that went wrong with a Republican Party that had strayed from its fiscal and small government roots. He will not be missed.
