Michelle Obama Plays Blacks Like A Cheap Violen

When progs play the race card, it is usually to mine white guilt and end debates they can't win on the merits - but not always. Sometimes the race card is solely meant for consumption by the black population itself. And that is how Michelle Obama played it the other day when she proclaimed that contesting voter i.d. laws is the "civil rights issue of our time."

Perhaps the most scurrilous aspect of the U.S. society today is how the vast majority of the black population is both screwed and manipulated by the far left - and in particular, by blacks in leadership on the far left. The myriad of deep and systemic problems facing blacks in the U.S. today do not arise out of white discrimination. A broken education system, disintegration of the black family unit, a black middle class being devastated in the Obama economy, massive unemployment and the lowest median net worth of any racial group in America are just a few of the problems facing blacks - and every last one of them can be laid, in whole or in large part, at the feet of the far left. That those problems should so plague the black community in America in the 21st century is unforgivable.

As a threshold matter, polls on the topic of voter i.d. laws show that the vast majority of Americans - 75% - support such laws. With such broad support, Michelle and the rest of the progs of the far left know that they are not going to be able to mine white-guilt on this issue. Theirs is a pitch being made directly to the black population in order to get them to turn out and vote in November for Obama. The message, repeated ad infinitum by the progs today, is:

Look at all those racist crackers out there trying to keep you from voting. Now don't worry about any of your other problems, and don't worry that the Obama economy has devastated blacks. Don't worry that Obama is willing to consign black children to a failing educational system in order to support the teachers' unions. The single most important thing you can do is come out and vote for those of us protecting you from this non-existant virulent racism.

Michelle and the progs are beyond shameless. Whoever said "you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time" did not take into account our modern black population. They will turn out and they will vote about 9 to 1 in favor of a man who has done more damage to the black community as a whole than the KKK did in its entire history.

Now I will agree with Michelle Obama on one point. The most important right in our democracy is the right to vote. Inherent in and central to that right is the proposition that each legal vote will be fully counted.

As to physical act of voting, the claim that a requirement for a picture i.d. will be unduly burdensome is a canard of the highest order. Getting a picture i.d. - which you would need to have in order to board a plane, enter a federal courthouse, enter the DOJ, attend the Democratic National Convention, enter the White House to see Michelle Obama, or buy alcohol - is not an onerous or unreasonable impediment to voting. I don't know of one person the left can point to who, in a state that has enacted voter i.d. laws, was actually kept from casting a ballot if they had a right to do so. Indeed, the lead plaintiffs the left have raised in voter i.d. cases either seem to have committed voter fraud (Indiana) or were, in fact, able to easily secure a free picture i.d. (Pennsylvania).

Voter i.d. laws are directed at the second half of voting rights, insuring that each legitimate vote cast is fully counted. Vote fraud is insidious, because it dilutes the vote of all legitimate voters. It is real, and it has impacted on numerous elections, including national elections, perhaps most recently the Senate race of 2008 in Minnesota.

I am not sure whether the progs are trying to suborn voter fraud or merely trying to get out the black vote. I strongly suspect that it is both. But in any event, if the black population were rational, they'd tell their prog masters to pack it. Blacks should be the first people standing in line in support of voter i.d. laws. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died since our country's inception in order to ensure that blacks have the right to vote, and that their vote would be fully counted. Ensuring that should be the most jealously guarded of all rights for blacks. The 90% of blacks that are still toiling away on the Democrat's plantation really need to figure out that the tune Michelle Obama is playing on that cheap violen is not "Lead Me To The Promised Land," its a bit older than that.

Voter I.D. In Perspective

I particularly like the fact that Ramierez points out that you have to have proper documentation to GET A JOB AT THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT. The left is doing nothing more than suborning vote fraud while selling it as protection of civil rights. Given that the most basic right in a democracy is to have one's vote fully count - i.e., not be diluted by fraud - I'd say this pegs the irony meter. And given that we have spilled much blood in this country to insure the right to vote and to have that vote count inures to blacks and all other minorities, it doubly pegs the irony meter that it is the black and left wing intelligentsia, the supposed champions of the victim groups, that is seeking to allow the conditions for voter fraud.

The Supreme Cout Upholds Law Requiring Photo I.D. For Voting

(Updated)In one of its major decisions, the Supreme Court voted 6 to 3 in Crawford v. Marion County Election Board to uphold Indiana's law mandating a photo i.d. for voting. This marks a milestone in protecting the integrity of the democratic process.
_____________________________________________________

The Indiana law at issue in the above case was an effort by the state to combat voter fraud. As has been the case in every state where such laws have been passed, the far left took exception and asked the law be declared unconstitutional. Apparently, the far left views voter fraud as a constitutional right. The opponents didn't help their case before the Supreme Court when one of the individuals they highlighted to show an undue burder in fact was committing voter fraud.

As the court looked at the issue:

The only kind of voter fraud that [the Indiana law] addresses is in-person voter impersonation at polling places. The record contains no evidence of any such fraud actually occurring in Indiana at any time in its history. Moreover, petitioners argue that provisions of the Indiana Criminal Code punishing such conduct as a felony provide adequate protection against the risk that such conduct will occur in the future. It remains true, however, that flagrant examples of such fraud in other parts of the country have been documented throughout this Nation’s history by respected historians and journalists, that occasional examples have surfaced in recent years, and that Indiana’s own experience with fraudulent voting in the 2003 Democratic primary for East Chicago Mayor — though perpetrated using absentee ballots and not in-person fraud— demonstrate that not only is the risk of voter fraud real but that it could affect the outcome of a close election.

The Court went on to give several examples of voter fraud, with the most colorful being in a footnote, recounting the days of Boss Tweed in post Civil War New York:

One infamous example is the New York City elections of 1868. William (Boss) Tweed set about solidifying and consolidating his control of the city. One local tough who worked for Boss Tweed, “Big Tim” Sullivan, insisted that his “repeaters” (individuals paid to vote multiple times) have whiskers:

“‘When you’ve voted ’em with their whiskers on, you take ’em to a barber and scrape off the chin fringe. Then you vote ’em again with the side lilacs and a mustache. Then to a barber again, off comes the sides and you vote ’em a third time with the mustache. If that ain’t enough and the box can stand a few more ballots, clean off the mustache and vote ’em plain face. That makes every one of ’em good for four votes.’”

A. Callow, The Tweed Ring 210 (1966) (quoting M. Werner, Tammany Hall 439 (1928))

The meat of the Court's finding from the majority opinion written by Justice Stevens is:

But just as other States provide free voter registration cards, the photo identification cards issued by Indiana’s BMV are also free. For most voters who need them, the inconvenience of making a trip to the BMV, gathering the required documents, and posing for a photograph surely does not qualify as a substantial burden on the right to vote, or even represent a significant increase over the usual burdens of voting.

The test adopted by the Court did hold open the possibility that other schemes or additional evidence of significant burden might change the opinion, but it found no such evidence in the record.

Justices Scalia, Thomas and Alito filed a concurrence, opining that the Courts decision should have adopted a different test that left no loopholes. As Justice Scalia wrote, "petitioners’ premise that the voter-identification law might have imposed a special burden on some voters is irrelevant."

The three most far left members of the Court, Justices Breyer, Ginsburg and Souter argued "State may not burden the right to vote merely by invoking abstract interests, be they legitimate, . . . or even compelling, but must make a particular, factual showing that threats to its interests outweigh the particular impediments it has imposed." In other words, common sense measures to detect and stop voter fraud are unconstitutional unless you can already detect voter fraud. Amazing.

This is a major win for Democracy. You can find the court's decision here.

Update: Here is hoping that Dafyyd at Big Lizards is correct in his assessment of the ramifications of this decision:

Such bills will, when fully implemented -- for example, when extended to the rest of the United States and to include absentee balloting -- make it much, much harder to commit voter fraud... and today's Democratics depend so heavily on fraud, they probably can't survive without it.

Interesting News – 10 January 2008

The top three Republican candidates appear to be in a tie in Michigan. I wonder if we will see a Republican nominee emerge before the convention. Rick Moran is asking for our support for Fred Thompson.

Some thoughts on McCain that mirror my own here. McCain is hardly a die hard conservative, and his votes on tax cuts and immigration are hard to swallow. But he has vowed to end earmarks and he makes the highest marks on national security, both of which make him an attactive candidate to me at least. In terms of bipartisanship, he is also the real deal – a true thorn for conservatives on many issues, but he would likely appeal to many independents. Bookworm Room wonders if he isin’t trying to position Lieberman as his running mate.

Remember the Lancet Report claiming 655,000 Iraqi dead issued just before the last election? The World Health Organization has released its own, much lower count based on a much larger sampling. Laer has the story here.

I am regularly amazed by the arguments against using picture I.D.’s to combat voter fraud. Of particular note is the argument that it would harm the indigent and prevent them from voting. That seems a canard. Anyone who can make it to a polling booth on election day can just as easilly make it to a government office, show proof of their identity and get an i.d. card. Contrary arguments appear to be an invitation for fraud. More thoughts here.

The People’s Democratic Republic of San Francisco wants to be a gun-free an island unto itself. And in some ways, they are making progress towards that goal.

Al Sharpton smells some race-geld to be had in the inadvertent comment of a TV golf analyst. He has started mining and much to its shame, the Golf Channel has caved.

And from Across the Pond . . .

Europe has discovered democracy. They want to vote and have their say . . . in the U.S. elections.

Democracy does have its limits, however. The governments of Europe want a "mature debate" on the EU, but no vote on the same. And on this most important issue facing Britain since 1939, Labour is being assissted by the Tories. Scandalous. When the Queen took the oath of coronation near half a century ago, it was clearly not the EU Constitution she was binding herself, along with the people of Britain, to uphold. At least some people are attempting to expose the government’s deceit in their own way.

The BBC knows where its bread is buttered – its Brussels, not Westminister. EU Referendum ponders whether this might explain the BBC’s fawning coverage of and deference to the EU. I think that the EU is simply the ultimate leftist construct, and given the bent of the BBC, that explains the affinity.

And the MCB responds to the comments of the Bishop of Rochester that there are no-go areas in Britain. Sheik Yer Mami notes that most Britons seem to disagree with the MCB.

"Millions of children are being raised on prejudice and disinformation. Educated in schools that teach a skewed ideology, they are exposed to a dogma that runs counter to core beliefs shared by many other Western countries. They study from textbooks filled with a doctrine of dissent, which they learn to recite as they prepare to attend many of the better universities in the world. Extracting these children from the jaws of bias could mean the difference between world prosperity and menacing global rifts." This is a quote on education in French and German public schools.
