Confusing Settled Issues With Facts

After the latest sermon warning of imminent doom from the Goracle and his College of Cardinals at the IPCC, one would think that all the issues surrounding global warming had been settled. But then along comes a heretic to confuse the issues with facts. This from the Sunday Times:

GREEN scientists have been accused of overstating the dangers of climate change by researchers who found that the number of people killed each year by weather-related disasters is falling.

Their report suggests that a central plank in the global warming argument – that it will result in a big increase in deaths from weather-related disasters – is undermined by the facts. It shows deaths in such disasters peaked in the 1920s and have been declining ever since.

Average annual deaths from weather-related events in the period 1990-2006 – considered by scientists to be when global warming has been most intense – were down by 87% on the 1900-89 average. The mortality rate from catastrophes, measured in deaths per million people, dropped by 93%.

The report by the Civil Society Coalition on Climate Change, a grouping of 41 mainly free-market bodies, comes on the eve of an international meeting on climate change in Bali.

Indur Goklany, a US-based expert on weather-related catastrophes, charted global deaths through the 20th century from “extreme” weather events.

Compared with the peak rate of deaths from weather-related events in the 1920s of nearly 500,000 a year, the death toll during the period 2000-06 averaged 19,900. “The United Nations has got the issues and their relative importance backward,” Goklany said. . . .

The factual challenge to increasing deaths from global warming is certainly not the only thing in the report likely to cause your average Gorite to spit blood. This from the opening paragraph of the CSCCC report:

The science of climate change remains hotly contested, with substantial disagreements over what impact humanity might have on the earth’s future climate . . . Nevertheless, there is considerable pressure on politicians to take action. Unfortunately, the organisation set up to advise governments on what action to take, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has shown itself to be heavily biased. This report is an attempt to provide an independent assessment of the implications of climate change for humanity and the policy options that might be adopted.

The rest of the report just gets better from there. As to the general issue of climate change issue, the report states:

The global warming debate is getting shriller. For the layman, it is also becoming more confusing. On the one hand, vehement voices assure us of a "scientific consensus" that the world's climate is getting warmer and that the main cause is human activity. We are told that the debate is over, indeed that we may already be facing apocalypse now. On the other hand, respectable scientific observers express plausible doubts about whether there is any long-term warming, whether CO2 levels are at all systematically correlated with global temperatures and, indeed, whether it is due to human economic activity. The more intently one listens, the more the debate sounds like a dialogue of the shouting deaf, and the more it reminds one of the passionate divisions in the run-up to Europe's wars of religion.

As to the scientific community, the report offers an equally blunt assessment:

. . . we observe that not only politicians but also the practitioners of science are not above the opportunistic pursuit of advantage by political manipulation. In science, for example, political ends seem to justify shortcuts with accepted scientific methods, thereby skewing the published findings. The competition for research funding, much of which comes nowadays from politically manipulated budget resources, all too frequently acts as an inducement to rent seeking by means of not-quite-objective research. Scientific establishments are nowadays typically led by savvy political operators, who are more interested in promoting their organisations than the scientific truth. Alas, scientists are, after all, as opportunistic as everyone else, if they can get away with it.

Heresy.

Blasphemy.

One expects this might get a reaction amongst followers of the Goracle not too dissimilar from that exhibited by peace loving Salafists in the Sudan with respect to ill named teddy bears. But actually, the Goracle’s alcolytes should not become too enraged. Yes, the report challenges several of their deeply held beliefs as to what the effects will be of global warming. But the truth be known, that still leaves a few other claims made by the global warming crowd that they can fall back upon:
