Uncle Tom versus Sambo

Charles Blow has referred to black tea party members as part of a "minstrel show" for the white racists. That usage of 1920's imagery is at least a bit more tactful than what others have called them - though not by much.

The hate heaped upon black Americans who have joined the Tea Party movement is deep indeed. That said, the black tea party goers are anything but shrinking violets, they all seem to be well aware of the history of Democrats in the civil rights movement, and indeed, it seems a few are proud to be called Uncle Tom - the hero who stood up to the evil Democrat in Harriet Beecher Stowe's iconic book. As to their detractors, at least one tea party goer felt the proper moniker for them was Sambo - still dancing to the white liberal democrat tune.

And then there is this observation from James Taranto at the WSJ:

The political left claims to love racial diversity, but it bitterly opposes such diversity on the political right. This is an obvious matter of political self-interest: Since 1964, blacks have voted overwhelmingly Democratic. If Republicans were able to attract black votes, the result would be catastrophic for the Democratic Party. Even in 2008, the Democrats' best presidential year since '64, if the black vote had been evenly split between the parties (and holding the nonblack vote constant), Barack Obama would have gotten about 48% of the vote and John McCain would be president.

To keep blacks voting Democratic, it is necessary for the party and its supporters to keep alive the idea that racism is prevalent in America and to portray the Republican Party (as well as independent challengers to the Democrats, such as the tea-party movement) as racist. The election of Barack Obama made nonsense of the idea that America remains a racist country and thereby necessitated an intensifying of attacks on the opposition as racist.

Loons On Steroids

The smears of Gov. Palin are getting "progressively" worse. We learn today that she is a frothing racist overheard referring to The One as Sambo - thus explaining her popularity with the right, where racism is apparently rampant, if not an actual plank in the Republican Party platform. And we learn that, in 1996, then Mayor Palin organized a book banning of a laundry list of books, some of which were not even published until two years later. Apparently, Mayor Palin was just trying to get ahead of the reality curve.

As the left becomes more frightened by the popularity of Sarah Palin, they are becoming ever more unhinged in their attacks. The first one is an article in the "LA Progressive" that, as Michelle Malkin notes, reads like something out of the Onion. Apparently, the author has found a bevy of unidentied people in Alaska who are willing to tell a sordid tale of racism and sexism by Gov. Palin, but too afraid to be identified lest they be sent to a secret Alaskan Gulag and . . . snowboarded, I guess:

Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean”

September 5, 2008

by Charley James –

“So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.

Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”

Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.

Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg. According to Alaskans interviewed for this article, she is also vindictive and mean. We’re talking Rove mean and Nixon vindictive.

No wonder the vast sea of white, cheering faces at the Republican Convention went wild for Sarah: They adore the type, it’s in their genetic code. . . .

Read the entire article. And here I thought there was a diverse crowd at the Republican Convention. I'll have to review the videotape. And I think we ought to follow up with the author's numerous sources. If only he would provide identifying information . . .

You have to love the projection of the author. I did a post on this three weeks ago, about how the right was the party of civil rights - until the far left hijacked the civil rights movement in 1968, changed it into marxist identity politics, and charged anyone who disagreed with them with racism. This is the first time, however, that I have heard that racism is actually a part of the conservative's genetic code. If that is the case for conservatives, what is the origins of Rev. Wright's racism?

Then there is this from Michelle Malking on the Palin book banning smear:

This time it’s hysterical librarians and their readers on the Internet disseminating a bogus list of books Gov. Sarah Palin supposedly banned in 1996. Looks like some of these library people failed reading comprehension. Take a look at the list below and you’ll find books Gov. Palin supposedly tried to ban…that hadn’t even been published yet. Example: The Harry Potter books, the first of which wasn’t published until 1998.

The smear merchants who continue to circulate the list also failed to do a simple Google search, which would have showed them that the bogus Sarah Palin Banned Book List is almost an exact copy-and-paste reproduction of a generic list of “Books Banned at One Time or Another in the United States” that has been floating around the Internet for years. STACLU notes that the official Obama campaign website is also perpetuating the fraud. And it’s spread to craigslist, where some unhinged user is posting images likening Palin to Hitler. Here it is again.

The person who first spread the Palin smear is identified as “Andrew Aucoin,” a commenter on the blog of librarian Jessamyn West. West has done the right thing in keeping the bogus comment up and pointing out in her main post that “there appears to be no truth to the claim made by the commenter, and no further documentation or support for this has turned up.”
It’s a fake. Not true. Total B.S. A lie. . . .
