The Toxic Fruit Of Race Hustling - Seeing The World "Through A Glass, Darkly"

Having spent a good portion of my life in the infantry, a true melting pot of races, I never saw racism nor the toxic effects of the left's racial politics until I left the military and entered civilian life. We were brothers and sisters in arms and all Americans. Nothing so perfectly captures that as this video of a retired MSG during the Baltimore riots.

The attitude displayed by that man is pervasive throughout the military. There is no victim group mentality among minorities in the military. Tragically, the same cannot be said of our nation outside the military. Blacks in the civilian world are fed a steady diet of propaganda that they are victims of pervasive racism in this country and that any problems common to their group are all as a result of external racism. They are literally programmed to view everything in life through the lens of their skin color and to interpret anything negative that occurs to be the result of external racism. It is a deeply distorted, toxic vision of life.

Exhibit No. One, from Walter Hudson writing at PJM:

A Facebook friend of mine just set the above image as his profile cover photo. He’s an activist in the Black Lives Matter movement whom I became acquainted with while working on an election issue in my state.

I look at this picture, and the first thing I think is: Wow. That’s… that’s really offensive.

Then I look at it some more. I think about it. Then I realize that for some people, like my Facebook friend, this accurately represents how they perceive the world in which they live.

We can criticize that. We can tell them that they are wrong to view the world that way. We can insist that things aren’t as bad as an image like this makes them out to be. And we may be right. But maybe we should stop and consider how terrifying life has to get for this to become your perception.

What do we do with that? How can we have anything approaching a productive conversation about race relations and criminal justice issues when starting from such divergent perceptions of the status quo?

What do we do indeed. The left's message, that racism is pervasive in America and the single major problem blacks face in this country is believed throughout, it would seem, much of the blacks in this nation at every socioeconomic level.

Exhibit No. Two is Michelle Obama. She is a woman who sees racism in innocent events and ready to claim racism at the drop of a hat. Indeed, as Ian Tuttle points out, for Ms. Obama, and indeed, for all of the left's victim's groups, the mere feeling of alienation is taken as proof positive of it's reality. In Ms. Obama's case, racism exists because she subjectively feels it, irrespective of reality.

Michelle Obama has led a charmed life, from attending Princeton and then Harvard Law to a successful career and now to First Lady. Racism has not held this woman back. And yet, in giving the Commencement Address to Tuskesgee University last weekend, she spoke of how hard her life has been having to endure racist sleights. It was astounding.

Exhibit No. Three is Saida Grundy, newly hired professor at Boston University, who seems quite the reverse racist -- something wholly tolerated on the left. Indeed, our universities seem full of such people, who teach grievance, hatred and the canard of pervasive racism as part of a curriculum. As to Ms. Grundy:

. . . [T]he Boston Globe reported some of the tweets: "why is white america so reluctant to identify white college males as a problem population?" and "every MLK week i commit myself to not spending a dime in white-owned businesses. and every year i find it nearly impossible."

This is yet another woman who has apparently not been held back by racism, yet she sees all white males as a "problem?" Not merely is Ms. Grundy's philosophy abhorrent and insane, it is equally as abhorrent and insane that Boston University fully intends to employ this women to teach at the institution.

The left's goal is to keep America balkanized. They are certainly succeeding. And while the extinguishment of racism on any sort of appreciable scale in this country has seen significant portion of blacks in this country advance into the upper and middle class, there is a large substrata of blacks that have not:

By virtually every metric, while the lives of blacks have improved, and while many black individuals have been able to embrace the opportunities this country has to offer, a very substantial portion of blacks have not. It is obscene that, in America, some 25% of blacks live in poverty. It is obscene that, where in 1965, less than 30% of black children were born into a single parent family, that number is now over 70%. It is obscene that that 30 to 40 percent of inner city kids don’t graduate from school, and a very substantial number who do graduate are functionally illiterate. It is obscene that blacks are seven times more likely to commit violent crime than other races. And it is obscene that these problems are cyclical. Nothing the left has done for blacks has broken this cycle, and it all portends to get much worse as cities, where large numbers of blacks congregate and many of whom take public sector jobs, fall into bankruptcy and economic chaos from the failure of the blue political / economic model.

As toxic as the fruit of race hustling is on the left to keep blacks balkanized and feeling victimized by racism, the penultimate cost of that effort is being paid first and foremost by blacks themselves. And for every black in the civilian world that climbs into the middle or upper class, one has to wonder how many are held back nursing grievance politics instead of focusing on the opportunities available to them.

When the blacks rioted in Baltimore last month, doing millions of dollars in damage to the businesses and stores that serve their neighborhoods, they were acting out over perceived racial conflict with the police that led to the death of Freddie Gray. To put that into perspective, there are a host of problems affecting blacks in inner city Baltimore, from poverty to unemployment to single parent homes and high crime. Freddie Gray was one of 87 homicides having occurred in Baltimore City already this year. The reality is that a black living in Baltimore City has exponentially more to fear from other blacks than they ever have to fear from the police. Yet none of these other homicides send people out into the street or raise the community in arms to try and stop this devastation in their communities. It is only because blacks are fed a steady diet of victimhood and grievance politics that they are primed to riot, rather than address the real problems they face.

We'll give the last word to a man living in "the hood," as he describes it, Mr. Eric Thomas:

Michelle Obama Plays Blacks Like A Cheap Violen

When progs play the race card, it is usually to mine white guilt and end debates they can't win on the merits - but not always. Sometimes the race card is solely meant for consumption by the black population itself. And that is how Michelle Obama played it the other day when she proclaimed that contesting voter i.d. laws is the "civil rights issue of our time."

Perhaps the most scurrilous aspect of the U.S. society today is how the vast majority of the black population is both screwed and manipulated by the far left - and in particular, by blacks in leadership on the far left. The myriad of deep and systemic problems facing blacks in the U.S. today do not arise out of white discrimination. A broken education system, disintegration of the black family unit, a black middle class being devastated in the Obama economy, massive unemployment and the lowest median net worth of any racial group in America are just a few of the problems facing blacks - and every last one of them can be laid, in whole or in large part, at the feet of the far left. That those problems should so plague the black community in America in the 21st century is unforgivable.

As a threshold matter, polls on the topic of voter i.d. laws show that the vast majority of Americans - 75% - support such laws. With such broad support, Michelle and the rest of the progs of the far left know that they are not going to be able to mine white-guilt on this issue. Theirs is a pitch being made directly to the black population in order to get them to turn out and vote in November for Obama. The message, repeated ad infinitum by the progs today, is:

Look at all those racist crackers out there trying to keep you from voting. Now don't worry about any of your other problems, and don't worry that the Obama economy has devastated blacks. Don't worry that Obama is willing to consign black children to a failing educational system in order to support the teachers' unions. The single most important thing you can do is come out and vote for those of us protecting you from this non-existant virulent racism.

Michelle and the progs are beyond shameless. Whoever said "you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time" did not take into account our modern black population. They will turn out and they will vote about 9 to 1 in favor of a man who has done more damage to the black community as a whole than the KKK did in its entire history.

Now I will agree with Michelle Obama on one point. The most important right in our democracy is the right to vote. Inherent in and central to that right is the proposition that each legal vote will be fully counted.

As to physical act of voting, the claim that a requirement for a picture i.d. will be unduly burdensome is a canard of the highest order. Getting a picture i.d. - which you would need to have in order to board a plane, enter a federal courthouse, enter the DOJ, attend the Democratic National Convention, enter the White House to see Michelle Obama, or buy alcohol - is not an onerous or unreasonable impediment to voting. I don't know of one person the left can point to who, in a state that has enacted voter i.d. laws, was actually kept from casting a ballot if they had a right to do so. Indeed, the lead plaintiffs the left have raised in voter i.d. cases either seem to have committed voter fraud (Indiana) or were, in fact, able to easily secure a free picture i.d. (Pennsylvania).

Voter i.d. laws are directed at the second half of voting rights, insuring that each legitimate vote cast is fully counted. Vote fraud is insidious, because it dilutes the vote of all legitimate voters. It is real, and it has impacted on numerous elections, including national elections, perhaps most recently the Senate race of 2008 in Minnesota.

I am not sure whether the progs are trying to suborn voter fraud or merely trying to get out the black vote. I strongly suspect that it is both. But in any event, if the black population were rational, they'd tell their prog masters to pack it. Blacks should be the first people standing in line in support of voter i.d. laws. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died since our country's inception in order to ensure that blacks have the right to vote, and that their vote would be fully counted. Ensuring that should be the most jealously guarded of all rights for blacks. The 90% of blacks that are still toiling away on the Democrat's plantation really need to figure out that the tune Michelle Obama is playing on that cheap violen is not "Lead Me To The Promised Land," its a bit older than that.

Humor From The DNC

Lots of things to bring a smile to one's face from the DNC . . . at least if you are not a Democrat. First up:

The economic wunderkind's at the DNC consider whether it would be a good idea to ban all corporate profits. It is funny until you realize that these people both vote and breed.

Then the Daily Show invites Democrats to demonstrate their famed "tolerance" towards others.

And thank God for videotape, as now can endlessly replay the spectacle of the DNC organizers ramming through a change to the Democrat platform with at least half of the delegates to the Convention booing the move to restore mention of God and mention of Israel as the capital of Jerusalem in the platform. The disorder was comic, though what this says about radicals in control of the modern Democratic Party is a tad more sobering.

Obama came into office on the promise of 'healing the racial divide.' Instead, he and his administration have, virtually from day one, fully embrace identity politics. Thus, is anyone surprised to find a large number of DNC delegates sporting a spiffy blue button with a naked appeal to voting on skin color?

And the very last joke out of the DNC was played on the rule of law. As J Christian Adams recounts at PJM: The “Ride for Justice” bus from “No Papers, No Fear” rolled into Charlotte to keep the fiasco humming. This outfit is an illegal alien pressure group. Yes, in 2012, we now have open and well-funded organizations representing people committing crimes. In fact, the bus was full of illegal aliens openly touting their illegal status! Naturally, they were welcomed with open arms by the DNC because they are supporting President Obama’s lawless immigration policies. Local authorities arrested ten of them outside the convention for state crimes and turned them over to federal authorities, who then promptly released them. Lawlessness has become policy.

Michelle Speaks

Michelle Obama just spoke at the DNC convention.  It was a well delivered speech. That said, the content, at least beyond the personal, was ridiculous. The penultimate laugh line was Michelle describing our Class Warrior in Chief, her hyperpartisan husband, in the following terms:

. . . for Barack, there is no such thing as “us” and “them” – he doesn’t care whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican, or none of the above…he knows that we all love our country…and he’s always ready to listen to good ideas…he’s always looking for the very best in everyone he meets.

My takeaways as to her message:

-  Life is hard.  Shut up, find a job if you can, and be prepared to sacrifice four more years for the glory of Baraky.

- The government is the source of all that is good in America and indispensable for individual achievement.

- The Obama's now fully embrace gay marriage

-  Supporting the Lilly Ledbetter Act is one of the litmus tests for support of equal rights for women.  The fact that our Civil Rights Act has, since 1964, allowed women to sue for discrimination in.pay is of no matter, as is the fact that the Lilly Ledbetter Act was really all about creating a bonanza for leftie trial lawyers - precisely the prescription for our already suffering economy.

-  The second half of the litmus test for being a supporter of women is support for abortion on demand.

Moo'chelle

This really is so mean . . . . lol.

See if you can guess which one is our own Moo'chelle Antoinete.

Visit Gerard Van der Luen for the rest of the story.

In all fairness to Michelle Obama, she is a large boned woman and not fat. That said, side by side comparisons with France's First Hottie Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Spain's Princess Letizia should be avoided at all costs.

Of Villains, The Economy, & On-Rushing Trains

That picture about sums up the state of our nation. Put Obama, Pelosi, and Reid in place of the villain. Sub our economy for the damsel in distress. Consider the on-rushing train to be our massive debt, massive borrowing, declining GDP, unemployment, inflation, and Obama's war on business. And quite literally on the heels of those are Obama's massive spending plans that have yet to hit, including cap and trade and socialized medicine. Tack on as the caboose the social security and medicare time bombs waiting in the wings for their cue to take center stage. And all of that does not even consider yet another seeming certainty - a coming massive jump in fuel prices brought on by Obama's war on fossil fuels and his backsliding on promises to allow us to exploit our natural resources and to begin building nuclear plants again. If you are not worried sick about what Obama is doing to our economy, then you are simply not paying attention.

The only thing that does not appear in the above picture is the MSM. The MSM, our supposed watchdog, are asking none of the hard questions. In the past week, for example, instead of asking about the ramifications of Obama's plans to tack yet even more massive spending and borrowing on top of our teetering economy, we have the editor of Newsweek and Chris Matthews speculating on whether Obama is actually a deity. We have masses of people going into unemployment, and instead of stories about how the Obama projections of unemployment were grotesquely off - or how the stimulus isn't stimulating - we instead are treated to stories of how our modern day Marie Antoinette has stayed behind in Paris to enjoy a shopping day at "Bonpoint, a children's clothing store favored by wealthy Parisians and international jet-setters like Sofia Coppola. . . ." The fact that the decision to do that means another massive taxpayer expense - as you can bet they aren't flying home coach - doesn't make it into the story. Let us eat stimulus, eh?

Update: I stand corrected. The AP actually came out with an article today, noting public dissatisfaction with a stimulus bill that isin't stimulating, going so far as to state "Obama Repackages Stimulus Plans With Old Promises."

Interestingly enough, even with this unprecedented sychophancy from the MSM, our Emperor's lack of clothing is nonetheless becoming apparent to the MSM-fed electorate. Recent Gallup polls show the the President finally in the negatives, with 48% to 46% disapproving of how he is handling the economy and 51% to 45% disapproving of the massive federal spending.

Remember when the economy started into its tailspin. The causes were the housing bubble brought about by government enforced lowering of lending standards in the mortgage industry, an utterly broken bond rating system, and mark to market accounting rules. Those all led to massive secondary effects, including the catastrophic failure of derivative securities that were, ironically enough, designed to spread risk. Add to that Niall Ferguson's identification of two prime drivers - improper regulation of bank capitalization and a mistake by the Fed in its control of interest rates.

What if any of those things has Obama addressed? None. Zero. Zip. Nada.

To the contrary, Obama has used the crisis as Keynesian bonanza - and with little or no return to show for it except a national debt that is sufficiently large that we now have to seriously worry about economy crippling secondary effects. No need to take my word for it - take Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's. This from Mr. Bernanke, via Powerline:

The administration recently submitted a proposed budget that projects the federal deficit to reach about $1.8 trillion this fiscal year before declining to 1.3 trillion in 2010 and roughly $900 billion in 2011.

As a consequence of this elevated level of borrowing, the ratio of federal debt held by the public, the nominal GDP, is likely to move up from about 40 percent before the onset of the financial crisis to about 70 percent in 2011. These developments will leave the debt-to-GDP ratio at its highest level since the early 1950s, the years following the massive debt buildup during World War II.

[E]ven as we take steps to address the recession and threats to financial stability, maintaining the confidence of the financial markets requires that we, as a nation, begin planning now for the restoration of fiscal balance. Prompt attention to questions of fiscal sustainability is particularly critical because of the coming budgetary and economic challenges associated with the retirement of the baby boom generation and continued increases in medical costs. ... With the ratio of debt to GDP already elevated, we will not be able to continue borrowing indefinitely to meet these demands.

In particular, over the longer term, achieving fiscal sustainability -- defined, for example, as a situation in which the ratios of government debt and interest payments to GDP are stable or declining, and tax rates are not so high as to impede economic growth -- requires that spending and budget deficits be well controlled.

If your unsure of the economist-esse there, what that means is that we need to get debt under control or face massive inflation and/or massive tax increases - if not both. As Bernanke added:

And at some point, you'll hit a point where you'll have to have both very draconian cuts and very large tax increases, which is not something we want. So in order to avoid that outcome down the road, we need to begin now to plan how we're going to get the fiscal situation into a better balance in the medium term. ...:

Have you seen any indication at all that Obama has taken heed of those words? Indeed, to the contrary, to add the coup de grâce to the economy, there are Obama's plans to add what amounts to a massive regressive tax on the economy with cap and trade and to add to the mountain of debt with socialized medicine. He has done exactly nothing to stimulate the only engine of our economy - business. There is no fiscal restraint. There are no questions being asked. But the freight train can clearly be heard in the distance.

The last time our government tried to lift us out of an economic crisis of this proportion with massive spending was during the depression, and it didn't work then either. And unlike FDR, we have no WWII waiting in the wings to finally pull us out of this ever deepening economic crisis.

Instead of stimulating the private sector by reducing an already confiscatory corporate tax and providing tax breaks to the actual tax payers - two acts which have proven effective every time they have been tried - Obama has borrowed and spent us into penury. It was Obama who told us that if we just gave him what we wanted, then unemployment wouldn't rise over 8%. Well . . .

Unemployment is rising - now to 9.4% - far beyond where Obama promised us if we would just pass his stimulus package in 48 hours without reading it. And indeed, just today, Obama announced plans to "create 600,000" jobs by speeding up stimulus spending. That may sound nice, but we are obviously losing jobs exponentially faster than the stimulus is creating them and, most importantly, none of these stimulus jobs come with any type of permenance. These aren't private sector jobs where you invest in an employee expecting that the employee will help you become more profitable long-term. The stimulus jobs aren't permenant. They are jobs to do a certain function that ends at one of two points - when the particular task ends or the public funding ends. It is smoke and mirrors of the worst kind. Indeed, no one more accurately sums up this insanity than Mark Steyn in his article of two weeks ago, What Are We Stimulating. May the funds be with you indeed. [Update: As pointed out by ex-dissident in the comments, to add to that, do see Michelle Malkin's post on the topic of 600,000 new jobs. It's an eye opener.]

Meanwhile, in the real world of business, the U.S. has the second highest corporate tax rates in the Western world. Its not confiscatory enough for Obama, apparently. Several days ago, there were the comments from the Microsoft CEO Steven Balmer that, if Obama in fact gets his plans through to tax overseas profits under the rubric of "closing a loophole," the CEO would move many of its employees overseas. Perhaps Obama should consult Maryland as to the effective tax rate on millionaires who decide they don't want to pay confiscatory taxes. That tax rate is zero, regardless of what the tax code may say.

Then there is Obama's class warrior plan to set limits on payments to private sector employees in the banking and financial industries - even businesses that have not accepted a dime of bailout money. This is the socialist / leftist solution to all things - more regulation. Bottom line, market forces will take care of private sector compensation if it does not make economic sense. It happens when poorly run businesses fail. The government's plan to control compensation will drive the best and brightest into the overseas competitors of our financial sector or out of the financial sector entirely. We will see a wilting of this key area of our economy. Oh, and by the way, its been done before. The year, 1931. As Villagers With Torches points out, it accomplished absolutely nothing in terms of lifting us out of the depression.

And then to top off all of the economic good news, we learned a few days ago that Obama is relying on a 31 year old grossly unqualified political appointee to drive the government's programs as regards GM and Chrysler. Is it any wonder that we soon thereafter find out that the Chrysler-Fiat deal was foisted on Chrysler with no real knowledge or investigation of Fiat? Indeed, this has all the earmarks of a superficially "good idea" dreamed up by a bunch of amateurs who have then pushed it through without bothering to check whether it was a "good idea" in reality. Both Chrysler and GM are now on life support. The government has stiffed the people who provided capital to these companies in favor of patronizing the UAW - itself one of the prime causes of the GM / Chrysler downfall. Our government, with the UAW as a junior partner/parasite, now runs GM and Chrysler. As George Will writes:

Washington’s “rescue” of GM began because GM is “too big to fail,” and bankruptcy is (well, was) “unthinkable.” Big? GM’s market capitalization, $375.8 million on Wednesday, is about the size of California Pizza Kitchen’s ($340 million) — is it too big to fail? — and one-eleventh that of Harley-Davidson ($4.3 billion). Fail? If GM has not already failed, New Coke was a success.

The administration is determined to prop up GM as a jobs program for the UAW and Midwestern states rich in electoral votes. This frenzy will intensify as the administration’s decisions deepen the debacle.

I recall Charles Krauthammer opining on Fox News shortly after Obama was elected, that things wouldn't get that bad under Obama because our economic woes would mean that he didn't have enough money available to implement his "transformation of the economy." Krauthammer did not count on the perfect storm of events in which we find ourselves, and with a President at the helm whose intent to "transform our economy" trumps any consideration of the long term consequences. Krauthammer, to his credit, recognized that reality by December.

The train is coming. It couldn't be any clearer. Meanwhile, Obama is tightening the ropes tying us to the tracks. And the MSM, they're too involved in praising Obama's god-like skills with knots to ask any questions about that annoying whistle getting ever louder in the background.

He's Baaack . . .

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, purveyor of racial hatred, seperatism, and anti-Americanism, spiritual advisor for Obama for over twenty years, has apparently escaped David Axelrod's shackles deep in the most remote parts of Ghana. He has turned up in Houston. And his lips are a flappin'. According to the NYT Post, he has commented on the current race, noting: "This ordinary boy [Obama] just might be the first president in the history of the United States to have a black woman sleeping at 1600 Pennsylvania legally."

Could this be any better timing? Can we schedule this guy for the Sunday talk show circuit?

Michelle Obama Quotes Saul Alinsky During Her Convention Speech

I missed this, but Gateway Pundit didn't. Michelle Obama, in her speech last night, borrowed some of her phrasing from the famous / infamous Marxist organizer Saul Alinsky. I knew that her speech sounded the socialist utopian themes that her husband has been advocating throughout this election, but I did not realize she had gone so far as to quote Alinsky.

This from Gateway Pundit:

Michelle Obama quotes lines some radical Far Left book in her DNC Convention speech.

What to make of Michelle Obama's use the terms, “The world as it is” and “The world as it should be?” From whence do they originate? Try Chapter 2 of Saul Alinsky’s book, Rules for Radicals. In last night's speech, Michelle Obama said something that peeked my curiousity. She said:

"Barack stood up that day," talking about a visit to Chicago neighborhoods, "and spoke words that have stayed with me ever since. He talked about “The world as it is” and “The world as it should be..." And, "All of us driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do – that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be." . . .

We really are at a crossroads in this country. Ever since FDR, socialists and marxists, far too often aided by the right, have been moving ever more towards the consolidation of power, the institution of large scale socialism and the institutionalization of identity politics. This once fringe element of the Democratic party is now its dominant force. With the nomination of Obama and the chance for a veto proof majority in the Senate, they are but a step away from realizing their goals of taking full control of the levers of power in America.

In all fairness, Marxism and socialism played a positive role at their inception. Women got the vote, the ills of the industrial revolution were blunted, and a minimum social safety net was put in place, all at a time when Marxism was in its infancy in the West, pushing these things. But Marxism is utopian and the palative it offered has long since changed to a poison for Western society. The changes it promises are fundamentally opposed to the millenia old traditions of Western Civilization and the centuries old traditions in the U.S. that have brought us to be the dominant power in the world.

We rose to that position of dominance on the bases of capitalism, freedom and individualism. Those on the Marxist left have been warring on these concepts as evil for decades, promising instead a utopian world with cradle to the crave socialism, the destruction of our existing societal structures, and their replacement by new structures based on the marxist vision of social equality. They would replace the melting pot with the multicultural. They would limit capitalism and freedom not on the margins to keep a level playing field, but at the center to insure "fairness." They would use the police powers of the state to enforce their vision of society - and there are far too many indications that they would use those same police powers to punish those who disagree.

In this context, for Michelle Obama to use her time at the DNC convention to dust off the phrasing of Saul Alinsky is not necessarily surprising, but it is very telling about how much of a radical change Obama represents. Saul Alinsky was a 1940's era marxist who quite literally wrote the book - Rules For Radicals - on how to effect the radical, left wing change we see going on within America. His philosophy and methods have been embraced by many on the left, most notably Obama and Hillary Clinton. Obama is advocating the institution of cradle to grave socialism in America and explictly followed in Alinsky's footsteps as a "community organizer." Hillary Clinton actually did her thesis at college on Alinsky, her populist rhetoric has sounded many of Alinsky's themes, and her first job offer after college was from Mr. Alinsky. Both have adopted Alinsky's tactics.

Update: I see some comments to this post at other cites claiming that Alinsky was not a marxist and the communists of the time hated him. The first is wrong. Alinsky was a dedicated Marxist. The latter is correct, however. Marxist radicals of Alinsky's era denounced Alinsky, but that was because of Alinsky's tactics, not his end goals. This from a 1972 interview of Alinsky in Playboy discussing why Alinsky always sought limited goals and incremental progress towards a Marxist utopia rather than a total and immediate revoultion such as occurred in Rusia and China:

PLAYBOY: Spokesmen for the New Left contend that this process of accommodation renders piecemeal reforms meaningless, and that the overthrow and replacement of the system itself is the only means of ensuring meaningful social progress. How would you answer them?

ALINSKY: That kind of rhetoric explains why there's nothing left of the New Left. It would be great if the whole system would just disappear overnight, but it won't, and the kids on the New Left sure as hell aren't going to overthrow it. Shit, Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin couldn't organize a successful luncheon, much less a revolution. I can sympathize with the impatience and pessimism of a lot of kids, but they've got to remember that real revolution is a long, hard process. Radicals in the United States don't have the strength to confront a local police force in armed struggle, much less the Army, Navy and Air Force; it's just idiocy for the Panthers to talk about all power growing from the barrel of a gun when the other side has all the guns.

America isn't Russia in 1917 or China in 1946, and any violent head-on collision with the power structure will only ensure the mass suicide of the left and the probable triumph of domestic fascism. So you're not going to get instant nirvana -- or any nirvana, for that matter -- and you've got to ask yourself, "Short of that, what the hell can I do?" The only answer is to build up local power bases that can merge into a national power movement that will ultimately realize your goals. That takes time and hard work and all the tedium connected with hard work, which turns off a lot of today's rhetorical radicals. But it's the only alternative to the continuation of the present system. . . .

Dianne Alden has an excellent essay on Saul Alinsky and how the fringe left has embraced his methods and ridden them to power. It is a few years old, but if you are unfamiliar with Mr. Alinsky, it is well worth a read. Suffice it to say, the only thing Ms. Obama could have done to be more open about the agenda of she and her husband is to have worked in the phrase, 'from each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs.'

Democratic Convention Day 1

A pretty dull night over all. I was looking forward to listening to Jimmy Carter open the festivities and speak about Obama serving out Jimmy's second term, but the DNC wisely pulled the plug on that. The only thing better would have been having Rev. Wright giving the opening prayer - but he is being held by David Axelrod bound and gagged deep in the jungles of Ghana with labels plastered all over his body saying "Do Not Release Until December 2008."

Pelosi spoke - and no one paid any attention. Heh. You couldn't hear her over the chatter from the floor. It was good to see Ted Kennedy make an appearance also. He looked remarkably healthy and gave a stump speech that was vintage Kennedy. We may have been given a hint of how dire is his prognosis when he promised to be at the January swearing in.

The main focus of the night was the speech by Michelle Obama, Barack's bitter half. She gave a very well rehearsed speech that was well delivered and, I thought, a good speech. It checked all the boxes and sounded the utopian hope and change themes. At least it was positive and did no harm. Karl Rove gave it a failing mark for being too much a stump speech and not enough an introduction into she and her husband.

Michelle Malkin has both the first draft of Michelle Obama's speech (heh) and the text of the actual speech.

The real fun was apparently outside of the Convention where the nations breakfast people - assorted nuts and flakes - gathered en masse. Gateway Pundit has all the stories, including:

- An anarchist riot outside the Sheraton Hotel resulting in sixteen arrests.

- Michelle Malkin getting chased about by screaming lefties.

- A Soros funded group has a bus containing a shrine to the evils of Bush and a film showing Americans being attacked by roadside bombs in Iraq.

- Midwest Jim enjoys the accomodations made available to our guests at Club Gitmo, compliments of Amnesty International.

- The People's Press Collective has video highlights of some of the demostrations. You will find some friendly faces in the crowd, including Cindy Sheehan and Ward Churchill.

Stay tuned tomorrow - its PUMA day.

Let Them Buy Earrings

The last 'first lady' to utter a truly flippant remark about her subjects then going through an economic crisis didn't fair so well. That was Marie Antoinette whose reply after being told that the French were in dire straights was "let them eat cake." She paid for her flippancy on the guillotine.

Clearly, Michelle Obama is not a student of history.

It seems that Ms. Obama is complaining about the $600 economic stimulus check that she received from the government to help bring our economy out of the doldrums. Displaying the same degree of clueless and calous elitism as her legandary predecessor, Ms. Obama recently "complained the government’s $600 economic stimulus check was only enough to buy 'a pair of earrings' . . ." Protein Wisdom has the story.

Arrogance, Entitlement & Obama's Anti-War Stance

The days of fawning press for Barack Obama may be waning. When the liberal AP starts tossing bombs, its time to start worrying in the Obama camp.

_______________________________________________________

This today from the AP:

[T]here's a line smart politicians don't cross — somewhere between "I'm qualified to be president" and "I'm born to be president." Wherever it lies, Barack Obama better watch his step.

He's bordering on arrogance.

The dictionary defines the word as an "offensive display of superiority or self-importance; overbearing pride." Obama may not be offensive or overbearing, but he can be a bit too cocky for his own good.

The freshman senator told reporters in July that he would overcome Hillary Rodham Clinton's lead in the polls because "to know me is to love me."

A few months later, he said, "Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there."

True, there's a certain amount of tongue-in-cheekiness to such remarks — almost as if Obama doesn't want to take his adoring crowds and political ascent too seriously. He was surely kidding when he told supporters in January that by the time he was done speaking "a light will shine down from somewhere."

"It will light upon you," he continued. "You will experience an epiphany. And you will say to yourself, I have to vote for Barack. I have to do it."

But both Obama and his wife, Michelle, ooze a sense of entitlement.

"Barack is one of the smartest people you will ever encounter who will deign to enter this messy thing called politics," his wife said a few weeks ago, adding that Americans will get only one chance to elect him.

. . . If arrogance is a display of self-importance and superiority, Obama earns the pejorative every time he calls his pre-invasion opposition to the war in Iraq an act of courage.

While he deserves credit for forecasting the complications of war in 2002, Obama's opposition carried scant political risk because he was a little-known state lawmaker courting liberal voters in Illinois. In 2004, when denouncing the war and war-enabling Democrats would have jeopardized his prized speaking role at the Democratic National Convention, Obama ducked the issue.

. . . Voters won't cut Obama as much slack on the humility test because he's sold himself as something different. While rejecting the "me"-centric status quo and promising a new era of post-partisan reform, Obama has said the movement he has created is not about him; it's about what Americans can do together if their faith in government is restored.

The power of his message lies in its humility. As he told 7,000 supporters at a rally last month, "I am an imperfect vessel for your hopes and dreams."

Nobody expects Obama to be perfect. But he better never forget that he isn't.
